Learn About Kōkua Kailua in Hawaii

One Sunday every month, scenic Ali`i Drive through the heart of downtown Kailua-Kona turns into a pedestrian mall for Kōkua Kailua, a “Made in Hawai‘i” marketplace offering the very best of local crafts, artwork, and specialty foods. This family-friendly all-day event (it’s dog-friendly, too!) features more than 100 different vendors offering everything from macadamia nuts to woodworking, local honey to a fine art. So bring the whole gang and explore the charming Kailua-Kona Village and enjoy a peaceful stroll down the historic “Pathway of Royalty” while sampling all the flavors, sights, and sounds of Hawai‘i.

“Made in Hawai‘i”

Now in its 9th year, Kōkua Kailua events are scheduled through the summer from 1-6pm on Sunday (for the full schedule, see their website). The marketplace stretches down Ali`i Drive from Kailua Pier to Hualalai Road, with a rotating cast of local and artisanal vendors. Local shops roll out the red carpet, and this idyllic section of Kona comes to life with local artisans and crafters, delicious refreshments, and delectable treats the entire family is sure to enjoy. Designed as a friendly, lazy Sunday stroll, the streets are full of congenial merchants and live entertainment, including live Hawaiian music and hula every Sunday at 4pm on the Hulihee Palace. Admission is free, and great deals and delightful souvenirs and Hawaiiana abound! Everything is local and the Sunday stroll is a great showcase for the vibrant arts and crafts scene in the islands, as well as a dedication to farming, eating, and buying local goods to support the island economy.

Kailua-Kona Village

This former fishing village is home to many historic spots, charming cafes, and delightful boutique stores. King Kamehameha, I spent the latter years of his life here on the shores of Kamakahonu Bay near modern-day Kailua pier, and the Hulihee Palace (a royal summer home), Ahuena Heiau (a Hawaiian temple), and Mokuaikaua Church are just some of the many historical places you can visit.
