Hawaiian International Film Festival

As the premier modern cultural event in the Hawaiian Islands, the 37th annual Hawaiian International Film Festival (Nov. 2-12, 2018, on O‘ahu, Nov. 16-19, 2018, on Kaua‘i and Big Island) is a showcase of the new films and cinematic works of the Pacific Rim. More than 160 films from more than 45 countries will be screened, including festival favorites from such prestigious venues as Sundance, Cannes, and Toronto. Presented by the Halekulani, HIFF is sure to entertain, enlighten, and inspire.

A Cultural Bridge

Hawai‘i is the intersection of East and West in the Pacific Rim, and nothing captures that confluence of culture better than HIFF. This year the festival will feature categories from around the Pacific, including “Fantastic Asia” (Asian genre cinema), a new “Made in Hawai‘i” (local filmmakers) category, “Planet Anime” (animated features from Japan), and the “Pacific Showcase” (cinema from Pacific Islander artists). Other long-running categories include “Eat.Drink.Film” (culinary cinema), a European showcase, the popular Documentaries category, American Indies, and “Green Screen” (environmental films including selections from the Banff Film Festival).

This year’s opening night film is the animated Mary and the Witch’s Flower, by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, his third feature film. For the full schedule, please check with the HIFF website closer to the date of the festival.

Tickets

Tickets are available online or at the HIFF box office on a per-film basis. Ticket holders should arrive at the theater 30 minutes prior to showtime. The online schedule and HIFF smartphone app make for an easy way to browse listings by category or search for a specific film. Tickets are $14, $10 for HIFF members. If you miss out on advance tickets for your desired film, “Rush” tickets might become available on a first-come, first-serve basis if any seats are available 5-10 minutes prior to showtime (Rush tickets are $10, cash only, and are generally in the first two rows). Films are shown in their original languages, with English subtitles where applicable.
