Ka’u Coffee

While Kona coffee might get all the press, did you know that Ka`u coffee, grown in the rich, volcanic soil of the Big Island, is one of the top-10 coffee varietals year in and year out? Renowned for its high quality, distinct flavors, and rich body, this delicious brew is celebrated every year at the Ka`u Coffee Festival in Pahala on the Big Island of Hawai‘i. This year the 10th annual celebration runs from April 21 to May 6, 2018, with events throughout to showcase Hawaiian culture and this delicious beverage.

Events Schedule

With 10 days of events dedicated to this flavorful coffee, local agriculture, and the beautiful lands of Hawai‘i, there is something for everyone. Guests are welcome to tour and explore the Ka`u farms throughout the festival, and special events are held nearly every day. April 21 saw the crowning of Miss Ka`u Coffee, and Friday April 27 marks the plantations first open house. A coffee recipe contest (April 29, 11am), a guided hike of the Ka`u Mountain WaterSystem (May 2, 9am, $45), and a plantation showcase complete with hayrides and a BBQ (May 4, 10am-3pm, $25) are just some of the attractions. On Saturday, May 5 the Festival hits high gear with the Ho`olaule`a celebration and Ka`u Coffee Experience at the Pahala Community Center, with guided tours, tastings, live music, hula performances, local crafts, and delicious food. Tickets, when required, can be purchased on-site.

The fun wraps up with an entertaining and educational Coffee College program on Sunday, May 6. This meeting of expert farmers and roasters is a place of learning and networking, and is fascinating for anyone interested in coffee or the coffee business.
