Overlooking the majestic Hamakua coast, the Laupahoehoe Music Festival is a vibrant celebration of Hawaiian music, culture, and tradition. Featuring live music and hula performances, this annual festival also features Hawaiian crafts and cultural demonstrations like poi pounding, lei making classes, a bounce house for the kids, and carnival style games. Fun for the whole family, you won’t want to miss the fun, the food, and the chance to contribute to a great cause.
Music at the Beach
Held at the scenic Laupahoehoe Beach Park on the gorgeous Hamakua coast, the Laupahoehoe Music Festival features the best of the Big Island’s local and traditional music scene. This year guests were treated to performances by the Laupahoehoe Ukulele Band, classic rockers Monster Zero, the country folk stylings of Dagan, and Ira Varize on the slack key guitar. Performing beneath swaying palm trees amidst tropical island breezes, this outdoor concert is a highlight of the spring season every year. Traditional Hawaiian chants and hula dances were also performed by the Komakakino troupe.
Food and Fun
After a successful fundraiser at the 13th annual Music Festival on April 21, 2018, you can count on more of the same at next year’s event which will boast bigger and better attractions. This year guests enjoyed food offerings from local merchants and vendors, ranging from delicious kalua pork, pork and peas, pasteles, Thai food, plus smoothies and cookies! A local pizza truck even made a stop, selling hot slices of deliciousness to enthusiastic concert goers. In between musical performances there was plenty of entertainment options, from cultural demonstrations like the traditional pounding of poi (harvested taro root beaten into a starch-rich paste, an important component of traditional Hawaiian food), lei making, and hula lessons. Local craft vendors were also on hand selling authentic and traditional handicrafts, and a silent auction contributed to the fundraising cause for the Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School, the beneficiary of the day’s efforts.
If you want to experience the best in traditional Hawaiian music and crafts, be sure to plan your next visit to the Big Island around the Laupahoehoe Music Festival next April.
