This fall, the thrills of the midway will return to the Hilo with the 68th annual Hawai‘i County Fair. After a record-breaking 2017 event, this year’s Fair promises even more fun for the entire family, with amusement park rides, community events, and live entertainment – plus all the delicious local treats you love and crave.
The Hawaii Fair
Held September 20-23, 2018 in Hilo at the Civic Auditorium Center, guests will be treated to four days of pageantry, fun competitions, carnival rides, midway games, and dozens of delicious local food vendors. Stroll the midway and test your nerves on thrilling rides like the Zipper, the Seven Seas, or Pharaoh’s Fury, or join your friends and family on amusement park classics like the Carousel, Century Wheel, and the Scooter (think really big bumper cars). Younger kids will love the Super Slide and the Magic Maze, as well as kid-friendly rides like Dizzy Dragons, Helicopters, and the Mini Coaster. After a round of rides, why not check out the amazing food offerings? From classics like funnel cake and hot dogs to new “delicacies” like deep-fried Twinkies, you’re sure to find something to suit everyone’s sweet tooth.
More than just rides, the Hawai‘i County Fair is a celebration of the local community. Be sure to check out the 4H Vegetable Show and judge for yourself the biggest and best produce in the various categories (last year’s award-winning pumpkin had to be seen to be believed!), then stop by the always popular Big Island Baby Contest, sure to evoke “ooh’s” and “ahh’s” from the crowd. Take in some live music like the Waiakea Ukelele Band or a full lineup of local acts every evening and all day on the weekend. Our favorite show is the gravity-defying antics of the Amazing Anastini Circus, featuring acrobats, entertainers, and a huge dose of comedic mishaps. This family-friendly show is included with Fair admission and runs at 9pm daily, with additional 3pm and 6pm shows on Saturday and Sunday. Don’t miss it!
In an effort to improve on last year’s record-breaking weekend attendance numbers, this year the fair organizers are moving to a smartphone app system for purchasing tickets and ride credits. There will also be a petting zoo and other live animals at this year’s fair, sure to please the young and old alike. Located at 323 Manono St. in Hilo, be sure to check the fair’s Facebook page closer to the event for more information.
