Kailua Kona Weather

Welcome to Sunny Kailua-Kona!

Want to make sure your paradise vacation isn’t going to be troubled by bad weather? Then Kailua-Kona on the Big Island is your best bet for sure sunshine. With average temperatures from the mid-70s to 80s year-round, you can expect sun nearly every day—whether you’re at the beach, strolling along the shops on Aliʻi Drive, or exploring a historical site like Huliheʻe Palace. In the afternoons and evenings, as rain clouds build up on the slopes of Hualalai, you might be treated to a cooling rain shower. Kona, Hawaiʻi weather is almost always perfect for vacation fun!

Life on the Dry Side

Kailua-Kona is on the leeward side of the island, meaning the opposite of the side that gets the prevailing winds. As such, it is protected from the bulk of the rain that falls on the Hilo side of the island (which keeps things green). Because of this, Kailua-Kona has a much drier climate. Expect to see vast fields of black lava and desert-like conditions in non-landscaped areas. However, if you feel like you’re getting too hot and dry during the day, you can always head just a short drive south along the highway and into the uplands, where lush greenery abounds and it rains nearly every evening.

A Perfect Location for Outdoor Activities

Kailua-Kona was a traditional summer home for the kings and queens of old Hawaiʻi, and today its perfect weather plays host to a number of popular outdoor gatherings. The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament is going into its 58th year; it’s the event that originally put the formerly sleepy fishing village of Kailua-Kona on the tourist map. Kona also hosts the world-famous Ironman Triathlon, where athletes come from around the globe to compete in the grueling contest of swimming, cycling, and running. Even if you’re not there in October, when the contest is held, you can see the starting point clearly marked at the pier in front of the King Kamehameha Hotel, and can jump in for a swim yourself! Whether your preferred outdoor activity is snorkeling, shopping, or sunning, Kailua-Kona’s beautiful weather will accommodate perfectly!
