Planning your trip to the Big Island around one of its many exciting festivals or events will allow you to experience the island in a deeper way and provide the opportunity to connect with locals and other visitors. If your travel schedule is flexible, these festivals and Big Island events are well worth the trip.
Watch a World Class Hula Competition – Big Island Events
The Merrie Monarch Festival is the ultimate hula show and competition held in the Hawaiian Islands and worldwide. The week-long event features an internationally acclaimed hula competition, Hawaiian arts fair, hula shows, and a grand parade. Halau (groups) come from other Hawaiian Islands and around the world to compete in this highly esteemed cultural event. Held in Hilo, the Merrie Monarch Festival is just a 1.5 hour drive from Kona.
Participate or Cheer on Athletes in a Running Race or Triathlon
The Big Island has its share of world class races for novice and experienced athletes. The Kona Marathon is held each year in June. What better motivation for training than to register for a race in a beautiful tropical destination? For those not up to the full marathon distance, the event also includes a half marathon, quarter marathon, and 5K course. The 5K is relatively flat and can be enjoyed by runners and walkers. To watch the world’s top triathletes compete in the pinnacle of athletic Big Island events, head to Kona during October for the Ironman World Championship. The Ironman consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run. Participants have to qualify for entry into the Ironman World Championship, which takes place right in Kailua-Kona, and is an amazing athletic event for spectators.
Watch the World’s Largest Outrigger Canoe Race

It is a four day racing event, with the main event being an 18 mile race between Kailua and Honaunau. This race is held each year on Labor Day Weekend.
