Escape the cold and enjoy a warm winter getaway in Kona. With warm temperatures, clear skies, and abundant wildlife, there are plenty of things to do in Kona during winter.
Take a Whale Watching Tour
Humpback whales migrate from Alaska to warm Hawaiian waters each year from November to May, with peak sightings between January and March. Taking a boat tour geared toward whale watching is an excellent opportunity to see these gentle giants up close. There are several outfitters in Kona that offer whale watching excursions. Take a boat excursion with Dolphin Discoveries, where you will get up close and personal with humpback whales, as well as pilot whales, beaked whales, melon-headed whales, and spinner dolphins. Seeing these creatures up close is a breathtaking experience. Book your tour departing from Keauhou Bay boat launch ramp by calling (808) 322-8000.
Stargaze on Mauna Kea
The Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station is located at 9,200 ft of elevation, halfway to the summit. They offer a free stargazing program on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm. High-tech telescopes are available for use and knowledgeable volunteers give a star tour, pointing out visible objects with a laser pointer. At 13,803 feet of elevation, the summit occasionally receives snowfall. Bring your coat along, because winter on Mauna Kea provides the unique opportunity to swim in the ocean in the morning and play in the snow in the evening.
