Experience the Incredible Island Ono Loa Grill in Kona

Drawing inspiration from the fiery glow of the Kilauea lava fields, the first secret (there are 7!) to the best burgers in town is fire-grilling over smoldering lava rocks. At Island Ono Loa Grill, they make hand-formed, juicy, grain-fed beef patties and sear them in the smoky, savory fires of the Big Island itself. The result? Fantastic flavor at an exceptional price. Rated the best burger in Kona on Trip Advisor and Yelp, we think you will agree: these burgers are out of this world!

Local Inspiration

When you care about burgers, it shows. Ono Loa is one of the best places to eat in Kona Hawaii and they REALLY care about their burgers. Using only locally raised, grain-fed Big Island beef (grass-fed is too lean to cook over flames), their burgers get two different seasoning blends (one on each side of their specially formed patties) and come served on Hawaiian sweet bread buns baked fresh daily at Punalu`u Bake Shop.

These buns are individually buttered and toasted before being handed off to hungry customers; they alone are worth a visit! (You should definitely make a trip to the bakery for their world-famous malasadas and chocolate eclairs, too.) Burgers come topped with the freshest local produce like Waimea lettuce, O’ahu-grown tomatoes, and Honoka`a goat cheese. Try the classic cheeseburger, or let your taste buds run wild with some of their fanciful toppings and ingredients like roasted poblano peppers, jalapeno-infused cream cheese, Applewood smoked bacon, or macadamia nut pesto.

Plate Lunch Party

Located at 75-5799 Ali`i Dr. in Kona, the grill serves up more than just burgers, too. Featuring Vienna beef hot dogs and offering up delicious sandwiches like the daily catch char-grilled fish sandwich, the BBQ Kalua Pork sandwich, the Chicken Pesto sandwich, and many more, there is something for everyone here. They also serve traditional Hawaiian plate lunches like the Loco Moco (fried eggs over rice with meat and gravy), the Hamburger plate, or the Kalua Pork. Each comes with rice and their delicious macaroni salad. Sandwiches get the fixings too, with your choice of fresh-cut French fries, a side salad, pineapple coleslaw, or crispy onion rings.

Open from 11am daily (except Wednesdays) until 7:30 (Tuesdays and Sundays) or 8pm (all other days), this conveniently located walk-up counter café is a great lunch or dinner spot for the entire family. Enjoy the comfortable, local, island-style atmosphere and kick back to really savor these amazing burgers. With all local ingredients and most items starting under $12, you might take all your meals here before heading to your cozy vacation rental home to relax.
