Hale Pohaku #1 was incredible, the views are breathtaking. My jaw hit the floor when we walked in the door, and then you step out on the lani and feel like you are standing over the rocks and surf below. Just from our lani we were able to watch turtles on the rocks, and dolphins and wales coming and going every day. And the sunsets are just stunning. The condo itself was great, very spacious and lots of storage. We had four adults and never seemed lacking for space, especially when you slide open the wall of doors that seperate the living space and the lanai. The condo was well stocked in the kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms. We were missing beach towels when we showed up, but they were brought over shortly after we had made the discovery. There was plenty of snorkel gear for the four of us as well. There is a great little beach area just around the point to the north of the condo, and can be accessed by a private gate from the condo grounds. Lots of tide pools and wading areas with turtles, eels, crabs, and all kinds of colorful fish. A local farmer's style market is a short walk north of the condo. When we booked I was contacted by a concierge, David, from the property management company. If David (or whomever from Kona Concierge) reaches out and offers assistance or a recommendation, TAKE IT! David was great and pushed us to book the things we wanted to do early in the week, that way if there were cancellations we had a better shot at rebooking later in the week. We were treated to unusually high wind and tides our first 3 days on island, so everything was cancelled (snorkel tours, scuba dives, manta night dives, summit star gazing). David and his team worked to get everything re-booked and the only thing we missed was because we decided not to re-book. They made all the calls, they made all the new arrangements, and they communicated with us the entire time. David and Kona Concierge were awesome and allowed us to enjoy our vacation when the weather had other plans. The only thing I thought was missing from the condo/complex was a grill. None of us really wanted to turn the stove or oven on to cook, but a grill would have gotten some use.

The construction crews above us (#3) and next to us (#2) for the last 4 days of our stay were typical contractors, loud and louder! Thanks for the small refund. I am not asking more!! The unit was great with minor issues (TV died, but immediately replaced), contractor in #3 cut the internet cable. Spectrum showed up in force on Sunday to repair. One section of the toaster is not working. That said, we love the condo and plan on coming back in the fall/winter. Please add a blanket to the closet, as it was chilly a couple of nights. Mahalo

We had a wonderful time visiting the Big Island of Hawaii. The condo was just what we had hoped for. The view, once you walk through the front door, is amazing! We really enjoyed sipping coffee in the morning and listening to the waves And watching the sunset in the evening from the balcony. So peaceful! The king sizes beds were comfortable. The condo was well equipped from the kitchen to the bathrooms. Plenty of towels and beach towels. there is no AC but with the brezze and the ceiling fans we didn't need it. The location of being a short 2 mile walk to Kona and a 1 mile walk to Magic Beach was great for us. We will definitely rent this unit again.

awesome property

Hale Pohaku 1 is an awesome property where you can hear the ocean from any room including the master suite. The kitchen was well equipped and even had storage containers with lids which saved us from using plastic bags for leftovers. The lanai furniture was comfortable and we spent many happy hours on the lanai, dining, watching the ocean and viewing pods of dolphins. Sunsets were gorgeous and since we couldn’t beat the view anywhere, we dined in most of the time. Plenty of closet space with enough hangers for our clothes. Best little washer and dryer we have ever had in a vacation rental. We have visited Hawaii many times and this place is at the top of the list.

Amazing property

Amazing property, love how clean and organized it was. For almost a month my wife and I loved listening to the waves on the lanai in the morning and evening. The host were very accomadating and attentive. We always stay for an extended period and the only drawback ( 1star ) to the complex are there is no BBQ area. (Must be an association policy.) Reading the other reviews you can tell it is a wonderful place. Were in the process of returning to the island next year for our month and Hale Pohaku 1 will definitely be on the list of possibilities.

Amazing Kona Vacation

This unit is very clean and well decorated and well stocked kitchen with every type of necessity. The patio is superb as is the view to the west and the sunsets. Being a first floor unit with the pool at the ground level below, still had this patio above those walking to the small beaches and it felt very secure. I would suggest later into April or May if looking for warmer sunshine!

Beautiful Condo

Beautiful condo in a small building. Very well appointed in furnishings and kitchen needs, management company is excellent. The only down side is that the location is VERY noisy. The condo is literally on the Ocean and the waves are LOUD, but you get used to that and it lulls you to sleep. HOWEVER, the bedroom is on the rear of the building and is on Ali'i Drive and the traffic noise was horrible. Many very loud revving engines and extremely loud music from cars going by. We had to purchase ear plugs in order to sleep. This traffic noise occurred about 4 nights out of the seven we were there.

The moment we stepped into the Hale Pohaku, we were amazed! Our first impression of the condo was that it was even more beautiful in person, and we immediately felt at home. The condo and the property as a whole are well maintained. Hale Pohaku is spacious, comfortable, and offers all the amenities, and more. As we made our meals and dined on the lanai at sunset, we enjoyed the sounds of the ocean and the most amazing sunsets. Hale Pohaku is a place we have fond memories of, and we are looking forward to returning for our next holiday. We really enjoyed the view and location of this condo but that was all. The louver design let in all sorts of noise, we needed ear plugs to sleep. Some of the louvers were broken and couldn't be fully closed. This was also not your home away from home feel that we enjoy from using short term rentals over hotels.

5 stars. We had a wonderful stay at Hale Pohaku 1! Kona Coast Vacations was prompt about sending information and replying to emails, and everyone there is so courteous! David was extra helpful as well. The view from this condo cannot be beat! Right on the ocean with a beautiful, spacious lanai and tons of room and storage space. The cool ocean breeze makes no ac perfectly tolerable and the open air style of this condo makes for an amazing experience. Beach access and pool are serene. Cannot recommend Kona Coast enough and we will be back to this condo if we travel back to Hawai'i in the future! Mahalo!

We had an absolute blast!

My family had an absolute blast in Hale Pohaku 1! It was the second visit to this unit for my wife and I, and our children's first visit to Hawaii. We were so excited to share Hale Pohaku and the Big Island with our kids (7 & 10 years old) and it did not disappoint. We chose to come back to Hale Pohaku becuase the amenities are great, pool is amazing (great new tile deck by the way!), with snorkeling and swimming steps away. Coffee on the lanai in the morning while looking for dolphins playing in the ocean and turtles in the tide pools. Just a beautiful place. Also, Mahalo to David for arranging our snorkeling trip! We had an awesome time with Captain Sharkey and would recommend that trip to everyone. I can't thank you enough for sharing Hale Pohaku 1 with my family. We can't wait to come back!

The view and location can not be beat. The lanai overlooking the water was amazing. Easy access to town and short drive to marina for snorkeling outings. Clean upon arrival, off street parking. Excellent value for the price. 3 story building with 6 units. We were on the 1st floor but you're elevated above the pool so there's no worries about open windows at night if you're traveling alone. It's very safe. We stayed for a week and thoroughly enjoyed the property. The building is older but our unit was modern and very clean. Mgmt company is very responsive. I will stay here again.

Great bones, but age of 40:years shows. Appliances need to be replaced. Grout between tiles is black in traffic areas but light tan in others. Screens need to be cleaned of accumulated dust. Screen for sliding doors does not stay on channel and therefore needs to be yanked to close or open. On the counter above the dishwasher, there is a constant layer of a grimy dust like material which suggests termites. None of this negated a great visit.

Great Unit For Our Stay!

Overall, this was a great unit for our stay. The lanai is to die for, I could have spent my whole time out there! We appreciated all of the furniture on the lanai and the beach related items like masks, umbrellas, etc. The bedrooms are very spacious and comfortable with a lot of storage options. If you don't mind walking, there are a few things we enjoyed nearby that we walked to such as Da Poke Shack and the Marketplace. Kailua is less than a 10 minute drive away and we also utilized Uber a few times; one-way fare costed less than $10. Not necessarily a con, but if you are a light sleeper, this may not be the best unit for you as most of the "walls" are actually window panels so you can hear people walking by and the street traffic pretty clearly in the mornings. I had ear plugs with me which solved that problem but it still took a day or so to get used to as it sometimes sounds like there is someone in the unit when in fact it is just someone talking outside. And one tip: the shower in the master bathroom takes a solid few minutes to heat up. There is a sign with some instructions for the water heater in the guest bedroom that was discovered too late but apparently said instructions work for both showers so make sure to read that sign sooner rather than later - unless you enjoy a cold shower. We hope to return!!

This property looks and is exactly as described on the VRBO website. This is definitely the nicest property that my husband and I have ever stayed at. Right on the beach so you can hear the waves crashing as you sit on the porch. Will 1000% be coming back here next time we stay on the Big Island. This property is just beautiful and that doesn't even do it justice!

Exceeded Expectations!

All of us were very excited to stay at this place to begin with, and it still exceeded expectations. As our first trip to the Big Island, it was a perfect location, about 5 min drive south of the main Kona strip. The unit is located on the first floor without any stairs needed for access. There's an amazing view from the lanai, and the pocketed sliding doors are perfect. We kept them open the whole time pretty much and the place felt great. The far bedroom (street side) is the one with the en suite bathroom, otherwise they both have king size beds and ample room. We weren't bothered by the reported street noise, it kinda blends in with the crashing waves honestly. The kitchen is equipped with all the tools you'll likely need. The place seems to be cleaned out of anything remotely perishable so be prepared for potentially getting things like salt/pepper, condiments, etc. The complex is quite with only 6 units. Pool was very nice and we always had it to ourselves whenever we went (just down one flight of stairs from your side private entrance). Beach access is mainly to a good collection of tide pools. There is a small sandy area to lay out if you'd like but probably not the best place to enter the water. I'd definitely recommend this place and if we come back to the BI, we'd likely stay here again.

Beautiful Ocean Front. Lanai door opens across entire front of the unit. Two 'Master' BRs. Kitchen and laundry room were well equipped with modern appliances. Easy covered parking. The larger Master BR was a little noisy and had fumes from street traffic. (1 out of 4 of us noticed this.). There is no BBQ. The gate to the ocean was not functional. (We just hopped over the wall. I understand that there is ocean access next door.). We saw two green sea turtles right in front on our first morning there. Great Condo!

If spectacular water views, easy access to the beach and the sound of the waves crashing is your thing then this place is for you. You can’t beat morning coffee while watching the spinner dolphins off the lanai or the spectacular sunsets each evening. Unfortunately the unit while once very lovely is growing tired and in need of TLC. It’s adequately clean. The appliances functioned for the exception of the dryer which management was not successful in getting fixed the entire week we were there although we did have many visits from the handy man. The road noise from Alii Drive is only eclipsed by the sound of the waves on the water end of the unit. Inconveniently the master bedroom gets the brunt of the relentless road activity day and night. Since there is no AC closing the windows is certainly not an option. So bring your ear plugs!

Truly special. Lovely condo overlooking the water, cooled by trade winds. Lanai is wonderful; we could sit there and watch the ocean and listen to the waves crashing all day. The nearby white sand beaches are protected by the rocks, so it’s possible to swim or beach-comb or see turtles—be aware that you do have to walk over rocks to get to the sand. Unit is comfortable, well-equipped, nicely decorated. You could stock up on food and never have to leave. We hope to return.

This is a great two bedroom apartment right on the water and in a pretty good location. It's a 30+ minute walk to town, but only a 10 minute car ride. The ocean breeze was amazing and we could see the sunset from our balcony every night which is AMAZING. We kept the doors to the lanai wide open could hear the ocean waves crashing. There are sliding screens to keep the bugs out too. The management team was super responsive when we had questions or needed ideas for activities. My gf and I traveled with another couple and the place worked really well for a jumping off point to nearby beaches and town. You can also access the water right in front of the property. It's rocky but beautiful and fun to explore. The pool is a great amenity as well. Clean and warm. Overall the place was clean but I wouldn't say it sparkled. Kitchen was nicely updated with working appliances but the bedrooms and bathrooms seems a little out dated. I wouldn't hesitate to rent from Kona Coast again, they were great.

Words are inadequate to describe Hale Pohaku1...the condo is better than the pictures display! The moment you arrive at the covered off street parking and step out of your car you can here the waves breaking onshore...heavenly!!! It is just a short walk through the garden courtyard to the front door of the condo and when you step inside the view is astounding and better than expected. We immediately opened the glass doors to the lanai and sat down to enjoy the tranquil sounds of the surf, a welcome sight and sound after 14 hours traveling. It was wonderful to stay here and there was plenty of room for the 4 of us. The kitchen is beautiful and well stocked, we ate all breakfasts and dinners on the lanai as who could resist that view!!! We had the pool to ourselves most of the time and the complex was quiet and serene. As others mentioned there was a little road noise during the day, but it quieted at night and honestly didn’t bother us at all. We had no issues with hot water at any time...as long as you run it s bit it was toasty hot for the duration of our showers and washing up at any time of the day. It was very nice that both bedrooms had their own private bath as we were with another couple. The decor and artwork were amazing...as was the view and the sound of the surf! It was very easy to find and just a short drive into town. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and did not want to leave. We hope to return someday. The folks at Kona Coast Vacations were great to work with -- quick responses and helpful. Our rental Hale Pohaku 1 was amazing! We've been renting through timeshare exchanges and VRBO for 30 years and this property is among the top 3 for exceeding my expectations. Spacious, incredibly well stocked (particularly the kitchen) and the location and view are incredible. Made it hard to ever want to leave to go out! Although a previous review expressed concerns about some road noise, we never found it bothersome. With the windows and doors open all night, the wonderful sound of crashing waves was all we heard. Hoping to return and rent this great place again!

Great view. Comfortable furniture. Well stocked kitchen (except for dishwasher soap, but we ate all meals in). Loved the ventilation. Both bedrooms get road noise and noise from the neighbor’s ac. We had plenty of hot water ... it just takes a while to get to the shower head. Lots of birds to see! Did I mention the excellent view!

we loved this condo on the ocean. Waking up every morning to that incredible view was awesome. The condo was clean and comfortable, kitchen well stocked and both bedrooms had comfortable king sized beds! It was in a great location to all the shops and activities that Hawai'i offers. We loved the pool in the afternoon and walking the beach collecting shells in the morning. It took alittle getting used to being awakened every morning by singing birds but we grew to like them!

We stayed in this unit for 10 nights. It is just as beautiful as the photos depict. There are only six units in this condo building and we hardly ever saw the other tenants. The kitchen was the most well-supplied of any rental we have had before. We spent most of our time on the lanai which is oceanfront and has comfortable furniture. The rocky beach out front was fun to explore, but the water is too rough for swimming. The pool was warm and we always had it to ourselves. If there is any downside to this rental, it is the road noise, heard mainly from the master bedroom. The automatic sprinkler also went off at 5:52 every morning, and there are roosters of course. We did have issues with hot water. It is a solar system and the water was hot most every afternoon, but a hot shower in the morning was never had. There is a water heater "booster" which we turned on, but still the water was only warm. This wasn't a big enough deal for us to report it to the management company. The location is good, close to downtown and within a few minutes drive to beaches. The furnishings and artwork in this unit were beautiful. We will keep this one on the list to return to one day! Overall we enjoyed our stay at this property and the beautiful views are hard to beat. We spent most of our time outside on the lanai. The pool here was large for a property with only 6 units and well maintained. The negatives were that there was no hot water from the solar heating even though it was sunny the 3 days we stayed here. There is a booster heater but that only takes the chill off and gives you luke warm water. The other point is that it can be very noisy here as you can hear everything from other units and the road. This is a very nice property. Nice kitchen and a to die for. Master bedroom is lovely and the second bedroom is comfortable, but is pretty small. Living room smelled a bit musty. I let the rental company know and they were going to get right to it. The pool was great. Overall, I think it was a very nice place and a very good value for the area. Hale Pohaku ! review

This is a lovely condo in a great location on the Kona coast. There are lots of positive aspects to the condo in the it is roomy, the location is perfect, it's well stocked, and it's well kept. On the negative side however there are some items that we struggled with. We normally rent condos in the Hawaiian Islands that have air conditioning and this one does not. While we knew this going into the rental, we didn't fully comprehend what that would mean. This unit, being right at ocean front, was designed to fully open up to ocean breezes by opening up sliding doors and louvered windows. While this kept the unit reasonably cool, it also meant that it is very noisy, not only from the ocean surf but the neighboring units as well as the very busy street traffic. We all wore earplugs at night to help quiet things down but it still is a very noisy spot.
Another issue with being right on the ocean with no air conditioning, is that the inside of the unit is damp. The tile floor became slick, the carpeting damp, the glass table tops cloudy, the countertops moist, all from the ocean air and high humidity. We were not used to this coming from an area that has relatively low humidity so perhaps this is normal for the area. I just think an air conditioned unit would have been more to our liking but the tradeoff was staying at a beautiful location right on the ocean.

We've stayed at this beautiful condo before because you just can't beat the proximity to the ocean. The condo is exactly as pictured.The pool is an added bonus. Two negatives-1. is the amount of time it takes to heat the water in the shower, even with the booster. A lot of water is wasted waiting for the temperature to come to semi-warm (it never got remotely hot)and 2. the vegetation on the wall and around the gate to the beach needs to be cut way back. Part of the view of the beach is hidden because of the overgrown bush and the little path from the gate to the beach is really difficult to walk through. I know some cutting has been done on the bushes but it needs a little more trimming.

Beautiful location

This was our first time at this location. It was perfect for two couples. It was furnish extremely well, very clean and had perfect view of the ocean. Easy access to the beach and shoreline. Turtles basking right in front of our condo was especially enjoyable as well as seeing dolphins jumping. We will definitely come back. The beach chairs, snorkeling equipment, sun umbrella came in very handy.

We also want to let you know that the sprinkler noise is from the condo complex adjacent to ours and we’ve requested that they move the time of the sprinkler to 7 a.m. or later. Regarding the hot water, since the solar hot water storage is on the roof and we are on the first floor with the bathrooms towards the back of our condo, it can take a few minutes for the hot water to arrive and is usual very hot. Generally, the electric booster is only needed if it’s been cloudy for 3 or more days in a row, which is rare in Kona. Thank you again and we look forward to hosting you again someday!
