This was our first time to the Big Island, and we had a great stay at Kona Makai 4202. Wouldn't hesitate to stay in this unit again and would recommend it to friends and family. The Kona Makai complex is located very conveniently in Kona-Kailua and parking was plentiful. It was about a 15 to 20 minute walk into Kailua town. 4202 has a very nice ocean view and we enjoyed having coffee and breakfast on the lanai every morning. We found the condo to be very clean and outfitted with all essential kitchenware. Take note there was no condiments such as oil, vinegar, spices, sugar, et cetera, when we arrived, so had to purchase these things. There was two beach chairs (however one was broken and unusable), a cooler, some pool noodles and some fins in the bedroom closet. We used the one good chair and the cooler, which was very handy to have. We rented extra chairs and an umbrella in Kailua, and rented snorkel gear not far away. The pool area is very nice and chairs were always available. We met lots of nice people at the pool and were given lots of good tourist information by some owners and other renters who return year after year. It was quite hot and muggy when we visited in November, so we were grateful for the air conditioners, however there are plenty of fans in the unit, which would probably be sufficient when not so hot. We were told there is great snorkelling right in front of Kona Makai, but sadly we ran out of time and never got around to experiencing it. We drove 1,000 miles on this trip. Wanted to see as much of the Big Island as we could. Looking forward to returning another time and enjoying some R&R. All in all, a great stay at Kona Makai 4202. Hope to be back.

The perfect home

Great place to stay! It was perfect as a home base to do business. Loved the court yard, the ocean view, and the peaceful quiet atmosphere. Additionally, left a tablet, Kona Coast was very efficient in sending it to me in a timely way. Thank you for a great vacation.

We enjoyed our stay, and with a few exceptions, the unit is furnished with everything you’ll need for a comfortable stay. The unit is a bit dated and could benefit with some updates. For example, the television is about the size of a computer desk monitor and there’s only a couch in the living room with no comfortable chair. The bathroom towels and the beach towels were somewhat worn. Neither of the ceiling fans worked properly. Note that this is one of the rental units that supplies little more than salt and pepper in the way of kitchen supplies. That said, our friends liked the unit so much that they are renting it next year.

Loved our condo

Had a great time staying at Kona Makai 4202. Parking was ample and check in was a breeze. The condo was well equipped and complex was beautiful. Can be cozy with neighbors on other lanais but to be expected in Hawaii. We had an exceptionally obnoxious neighbor yelling loudly and profanely for a very long time. One call to Kona Coast Vacations management and the situation was quickly resolved and no more problems. A couple suggestions for the condo itself: a new mattress would be welcomed, a bigger and smart tv mounted on the wall so the AC isn’t blocked by furniture. Everything else was perfect.

I'd like to start by simply saying that we're not big travellers and usually never add reviews. However, in the case of Kona Coast Vacations and Kona Makai 4202, we absolutely have to tell everyone how amazing this vacation was for our 10th Anniversary. Let me say right up front, if you are looking for a good party spot condo, this is not it. Yes, there are numerous rules but they apply to the entire complex, renters and owners alike. It makes for a very quiet and peaceful location. The gated complex adds a level of security which was comforting, if that matters. The condo itself was very clean, great laid out and so well equipped that there is almost nothing needed other than food. This was important for us because we prefer making our own meals rather than eating out. And yes, the bed was extremely comfortable! The location and distance to downtown Kailua-Kona could not be much better. we had a 1 km walk to a small sandy beach and then another 1/2 km to the stores. It's exactly 3 km to the end of the pier. If you enjoy walking, this is fantastic. In fact, we were pleasantly shocked and amazed at the active walkers & runners out on Ali'i Drive every morning at 6am. The process of booking through Kona Coast Vacations was very easy and hassle free. The icing on the cake was dealing with David (Kona Concierge) who was a wealth of knowledge and assistance in planning & booking our tours. If we ever get an opportunity to to return, we will not hesitate to book through Kona Coast Vacations. Thank you, Nicole & David

The one thing that really stood out and made our stay much more enjoyable was that you were able get us into the unit early. This was very appreciated and helpful. It may not seem like a big deal but it was. Our flight arrived at 9:30am. We were tired and running out of ideas on how to bide out time until 4:00pm. Getting into the unit early allowed us to do some grocery shopping and other errands without having to worry about keeping our food cold, not to mention being able to change out of our travel clothes into more appropriate attire for Hawaii. You manage vacation rental condos for two families we know, they recommended we contact you as both of their units were booked, I can see why. We will use you again for our next trip. Went to Kona to attend a wedding and found this unit. Looked good, and it was. Do not have anything to say bad about Alii Makai. It was quiet, grounds kept up very nice. Would we go again to this unit? Yes we would.

Tranquil Place

We had an end unit that was shaded in the morning looking out over the gardens to the ocean. Tranquil place to R & R. There are 100+ units in the complex and rules to limit phone calls on the balcony's to keep the noise levels down. Pricing was competitive and quality was top of the pile. Parking was crowded but not a problem finding space. The location is close to the tourist strip and accessible to grocery and restaurants by shuttle or rental car but not walking. Book here and you will like it. Enjoy.

We Had a Great Time

We had a great time at this venue. The pictures were true to form. The location was excellent as it made us get out and walk a bit :) . Plenty of parking for our rental vehicle. The unit was VERY well appointed. There was a little confusion over the registration process for the rental car but an on site employee was quick to help and it was appreciated. We are already talking about re-booking for next year! Highly recommend this location.

Location was Great

The location is great, we did a lot of walking into town, about 1.5 miles one way. We also had a car and we're gone all day everyday. Of course the pictures make the place look way bigger than it was, but we managed okay with 4 adults. The negative issues were all the rules. As Christian adults were are very respectful. We don't drink nor smoke or stay up late partying. But there were rules on which stalls to park in, "no phone calls on the lanai", in fact nothing on the lani, don't slam the door", even though the screen door slams on it own. "Take out the trash everyday" and I had to count towels to make sure we washed any "excess" towels. There's 3 pages or rules and whatnot. One morning we received a note left on our door because one time I forgot to change the mode on the ac unit. The front door was also hard to find in the dark when we arrived. The numbers to all the units are covered by greenery. So it was not a very relaxing place to stay, convenient but not relaxing.

We had an amazing stay at Kona Makai 4202!! Very clean and great location to downtown. Easy access to reservation detail information on Happy Stays X App and clear communication prior to check-in. Friendly neighbors and quiet days/nights. Bonus to have beach gear (umbrella, chairs and cooler) for use. We would definitely stay again if visiting the Big Island. Mahalo!

Great Vacation

We had a great vacation to Kona. This is a great location. The condo was clean and just the perfect size for us. It is a very quiet complex. If I have one suggestion, we only had two towels for one week. So having only one towel each, we had to do laundry ever day. Other than that, highly recommend this condo.

Nice unit, clean and well stocked. The only downside was the carpet had been cleaned and was wet. It took 2 days to dry completely and had soap residue left on it. We would book this unit again.

Comfortable

I had friends staying in complex so I spent little time at the condo but when I was there, it was comfortable. I did get a note on my door from a “neighbor” who did not like the A/C on “econo” as it cycles on and off and apparently disturbed them. This unit is next to the parking lot and tennis courts so I used the A/C at night for white noise. The note stopped me from using the econo mode A/C… also, the shower/tub needs new anti-slip strips. Tub is slippery when wet. Small adjustments… overall, I was quite comfortable and would stay here again!

Great Vacation - Unit could have been better

Overall we had a great vacation and enjoyed our stay at Kona Makai. We also were very satisfied with our interactions with Kona Coast Vacations. The unit we stayed in (4202) could have been easily more comfortable for our 3 week stay there with a few updates. A comfy chair in the living room, more comfortable Lanai furniture, a sunshade on the parking lot lanai (which could also offer some privacy) and last but not least the white carpet could be replaced with alternate flooring that is easier to keep clean. On the plus side the kitchen was fabulous and one of the best stocked kitchens we've had in many years of coming to the island. And as mentioned before Kona Makai is a great resort, however, we would most likely look for a different unit to stay in.

Highly Recommend!

Complex is walking distance to shops and restaurants. Unit was comfortable with good mattress, pillows, linens, towels. There are 6 buildings in the complex and 5 have angled views of the ocean but the building that this unit is in, has a straight on ocean view because it runs across the back of the property parallel with the ocean. Some of the view is obscured by palm trees but that will change as the palm fronds are trimmed away as the trees grow taller . Nice patio, two a/c units and two ceiling fans. Quiet complex. Lots of BBQs by the pool. Owner has provided a little cooler and two beach chairs and beach towels. Very well stocked kitchen too. The only thing we thought could be improved was the flooring which is a well worn off white carpet. We would highly recommend this unit.
