Activities Abound – Kahakai Estates Kona
Your beach options are as many and varied as the flowers of Hawaiʻi. Nearby options include Magic Sands for catching waves and Kahaluʻu for snorkeling. If you’re up for a short day trip, consider heading north to Hāpuna Beach, the largest stretch of white sand to be found on Hawaiʻi Island, a popular destination for visitors and locals alike. Also, to the north, ʻAnaehoʻomalu Beach (A-Bay) is an awesome family-friendly spot for renting fun beach gear, like stand-up paddleboards and hydro bikes. You can even hop on a glass-bottom boat or whale-watching trip from here! Enjoy an evening cocktail with your toes in the sand at Lava Lava Beach Club.
Waikoloa Beach Resort is a great destination for a day of resort-style fun! Explore the fabulous pools and grounds of the Hilton, where incredible Asian and Pacific art and artifacts abound. Play a round of golf at one of two world-class 18-hole courses. Plan a spa day with fabulous soaks and massages and finish up with a great meal: there are so many options to choose from at Waikoloa!
If you’d rather spend a day going south, take a drive through the uplands of south Kona until you reach Kealakekua Bay, the infamous spot of Captain Cook’s demise. It’s one of the most remarkable snorkeling destinations on the island, though the best snorkeling is most easily reached via a tour boat from Keauhou Pier. Kealakekua is also an amazing spot to take a kayak tour! Please note that there are only two companies permitted to run this type of tour, so be sure to make your arrangements in advance.
Along your drive south, you’ll pass by Kona’s many fragrant coffee farms. You’ll never get it fresher than this, so be sure to stop by and taste a brew or two! South Kona’s coffee towns are also famous for their many artist residents, so small galleries and local shops abound for your exploration pleasure. The climate is pleasantly cooler up here on the slopes of the mountain, and you may be treated to a refreshing afternoon rain shower!
If you head all the way south, you’ll eventually reach the southernmost tip of the island, called Ka Lae, or South Point. This otherworldly windswept landscape is unlike any other part of the island! Marvel at the steep lava cliffs dropping off into the open ocean, as well as the local kids who dare to leap the 50+ feet into the deep sea. The current is very strong here, and there are no lifeguards, so please don’t try to copy them! This is the open ocean, and all the really big fish are right here, as evidenced by the many fishermen who come here for a rare spot to angle in the deep water from the shoreline. And the best part is, at the end of a busy day of adventuring, you’ll know your plush accommodations at Kahakai Estates are waiting for you to rest your head, and dream of what tomorrow will bring!
