Kona Biking

Warning: Before embarking on any outdoor activity, make sure to check with lifeguards for current conditions!

There is some great cycling and wonderful scenery in and around Kona. Home of the world-famous Ironman Triathlon, Kona bike trails offers leisurely, fairly flat pleasure cycling as well as grueling, thigh-busting adventures. Though Kona bike lanes are not abundant, locals are used to seeing cyclists and are generally quite polite about sharing the road. There are numerous Kona bike rental outfits and a handful of bike tour operators who are passionate about the sport. One of the best in-town rides is the length of Ali‘i Drive, which is level and starts in downtown Kona, runs south past White Sands Beach, and on down to Keauhou Bay. One note for those who wish to get around Kona solely by bicycle: all of the grocery stores require steep uphill climbs, so you may want to lock up your bike and take a trolley to go shopping for goods.
