Day 1: Coastal Relaxation and Oceanfront Dining
With an early enough arrival, you can have plenty of time to enjoy some island scenery on your very first day. From Kona Airport, the drive on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway takes you by stark black lava fields and breathtaking coastal vistas on the way to your rental.
The best way to shake off any initial travel fatigue is to spend some time by the water. After dropping off your bags, consider heading to spots like Anaehoomalu Bay or Kahalu’u Beach Park to swim, surf, or take in the stunning coastal views from a beach blanket.
As the day winds down, Downtown Kailua-Kona offers a great first taste of the island’s relaxed dining scene. A sunset dinner at a bayfront eatery or drinks at one of the local craft breweries is an excellent way to cap off your first evening in town.
Day 2: Watersports, Coastal Parks, and Nighttime Snorkeling

Start your first full day on the island exploring the Kona Coast’s crystal-clear waters.
Morning: Paddling on Kailua Bay
Kamakahonu Beach on Kailua Bay is a prime location for ocean kayaking and paddleboarding. Renting a board here early in the day allows you to glide across these beautiful turquoise waters when the bay is at its calmest.
Afternoon: Coffee Tours and Coastal Exploration
Grab lunch at a local poke spot before heading south through Kona’s legendary coffee country. After a local coffee farm tour or tasting experience, PuÊ»uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, or the “City of Refuge,” offers beautiful trails, scenic views, and the chance to see ancient lava rock walls. If you want to get back out on the water, you can also book a guided coral reef boat tour departing from Keauhou Bay just up the road.
Evening: Night Snorkeling with Manta Rays
No visit to the Kona Coast is complete without experiencing the world-famous nighttime manta ray swim. These incredible guided snorkeling tours allow you to float directly above manta rays with wingspans up to 14 feet across. The up-close encounter with these gentle giants is widely considered one of the Big Island’s top must-see attractions.
Day 3: Volcanoes National Park
Set aside day 3 for a Big Island road trip to the southern coast’s incredible national park.
All Day: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

No trip to the island is complete without visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Here, you can enjoy a scenic drive along Crater Rim Drive, tread through the Nahuku Lava Tube, or descend the Kilauea Iki Trail to walk across a former molten lava lake.
The wonders of this incredible park might also extend beyond sundown. Depending on volcanic activity levels, you may be able to see the orange glow of active lava vents lighting up the night sky. This gorgeous phenomenon regularly brings visitors to the surrounding caldera overlooks after dark.
Just be sure to check for the latest updates on volcanic activity conditions before heading toward the park. While there, follow all park regulations and guidelines to ensure a safe and fun experience.
Day 4: Championship Golfing, Pristine Beaches, and Kona Luaus
After a busy day on the road, dedicate day 4 to some relaxed time on the greens and quiet Kona Coast shores.
Morning: Golfing Through Lava Fields
Tee off early at one of the championship golf courses in Waikoloa or Mauna Lani. Designed by world-renowned golf architects, these courses feature green fairways running directly through jagged, black basalt lava fields, plus impressive ocean views on nearly every hole.
Afternoon: Unwind on White-Sand Beaches
Spend your afternoon enjoying the pristine shores of Hapuna Beach. Set on the northern end of the island, this white-sand shoreline is great for sunbathing, swimming, and bodyboarding.
Evening: Traditional Kona Luau
After your beach day, you can attend a classic waterfront Kona luau for an authentic local experience. Here, you can expect a traditional Hawaiian feast followed by storytelling and hula dancing performances.
Day 5: Deep-Sea Fishing and Exploring Waimea

On your fifth day, embark on an early-morning fishing charter before heading inland to learn about the Big Island’s ranching heritage.
Morning: Deep-Sea Fishing Adventures
If you enjoy deep-sea angling, local charters regularly depart from the Keauhou and Honokohau harbors, allowing you to book 4- or 6-hour expeditions. The Big Island’s immediate underwater drop-offs allow you to maximize your actual fishing time, typically letting you drop lines within minutes of leaving the dock. From there, you can expect fast-paced trolling for mahi-mahi, wahoo, yellowfin tuna, and even marlin.
Afternoon and Evening: Waimea Paniolo Country
After an early fishing trip, grab a cold schooner at the Harbor House, or head up into the highlands of Waimea to round out your day. The drive features miles of expansive, rolling pastures and cattle ranches set against the backdrop of Mauna Kea. Browse boutique shops in town, visit the local farmers’ market, or tour the grounds of Parker Ranch.
The northern end of the island is also home to several horseback riding tour operators. Book a spot for your crew on a guided ride through ranch lands with a coastline view.
Day 6: Whale-Watching Expeditions and Helicopter Tours
Dedicate your sixth day to seeing the island from new perspectives.
Morning: An Unforgettable Whale-Watching Trip
If your visit falls between December and April, be sure to book a morning whale-watching tour. Humpback whales migrate to the warm waters off the Kona Coast each year, offering a chance to spot these incredible animals breaching high above the water. Outside of whale season, similar charters focus on wild dolphin encounters and deep-water snorkeling excursions, and are also well worth the trip.
Afternoon: An Island Helicopter Tour

In the afternoon, consider booking a helicopter tour for a bucket-list flight experience. These trips offer a complete view of the island’s landscapes that you can’t get anywhere on the ground. You’ll see plenty of cascading waterfalls, towering seaside cliffs, and recent lava formations across the terrain.
Day 7: Kona Town Shopping and a Farewell Sunset
The final day on your Big Island 7-Day itinerary list is the best time to fully embrace the slow pace of island living.
Morning: Explore Ali’i Drive
Head back to Downtown Kailua-Kona to enjoy breakfast, browse local galleries, or pick up some fresh Kona coffee beans to take back home.
Afternoon and Evening: Beach Time and a Sunset
At this point in your trip, you’ll probably want to spend a little more time soaking in the tropical bliss found along the shoreline. After swimming or snorkeling over colorful reef fish, wrap up your vacation with a final sunset viewed from the sand.
